A full hearing assessment at our Birmingham or Sutton Coldfield hearing centre is free, and it carries no obligation to buy hearing aids. An HCPC-registered audiologist carries out every test. Appointments also last up to 1.5 hours, so we can check both your hearing and how well you follow speech in background noise.
What your hearing assessment includes
- A comprehensive case history about the listening situations you find difficult
- Video otoscopy to check your ear canals and eardrums, including for ear wax
- Tympanometry, a middle ear test that checks how your eardrum moves
- Full diagnostic audiometry
- QuickSIN speech-in-noise testing
- AB Word List speech testing
- ACT (Audible Contrast Threshold) testing
If ear wax is blocking your ears, we remove it first, because wax can affect your results. However, we leave at least 24 hours between microsuction and a diagnostic hearing test, so your results are accurate.
After your assessment
We explain your results clearly and give you honest advice. If hearing aids would help, we offer a free hearing aid trial, so you can try them before you decide. If your results suggest another cause, such as a middle ear problem, we refer you to your GP or an ENT specialist.
Where to book a hearing assessment
You can book at Birmingham Hearing Care in Kings Heath or Sutton Hearing Care in Streetly. Both centres are open Monday to Saturday, 9am–5pm. Call 0121 369 0780 or book online.
If you notice sudden hearing loss in one or both ears, contact your GP or NHS 111 the same day.
