Is microsuction better than ear syringing?

Most ear specialists consider microsuction the gold standard. First, we remove your earwax under a direct endoscopic view on a 50-inch TV screen. So you can watch the procedure live. As a result, the procedure is more precise and painless. We also offer modern water irrigation with saline solution, but only when it is the safer clinical option. For example, we may use it for very soft ear wax stuck to the eardrum.

Yes. Most patients have microsuction, and we use gentle water irrigation or manual removal when your audiologist decides it suits your ear better. Also, same-day appointments are usually available, from £50 for one ear or £70 for both.

We advise one to two days of olive oil drops to soften ear wax, but you don’t always need them. In fact, many patients come in for same-day removal without drops, and we still remove the wax effectively. If we feel you need oil first, we book a second appointment free of charge. We always follow a strict risk assessment before we go ahead.

However, avoid using drops for more than a few days. Too many drops can make wax slip onto the eardrum and seal the ear canal completely. So if your ear is already fully blocked, just book in and we’ll assess it.

We also provide ear wax removal for children aged 5 to 10. In fact, children of this age generally have smaller ear canals, which are more difficult to navigate. That is why all our audiologists complete a significant caseload of children’s procedures before we consider them competent.

We always advise a qualified audiologist or a practitioner nurse with ear, nose and throat experience. Practitioners without an audiology background simply won’t have the experience for complex cases. So you usually want an audiologist with hundreds of ear wax removals behind them. We say this because the training is unregulated. As a result, a non-audiologist with no experience in audiological medicine could carry out an invasive procedure on you.
