About the Author:

Danish joined our Streetly practice in 2024 as our resident Hearing Aid Dispenser. Before that, he gained extensive experience across the major high street chains. As a result, he knows what good independent care should look like.

Danish was already very experienced in microsuction before he joined us. He then completed our in-house endoscopic microsuction training.

Alongside his clinical work, Danish also heads our training programme, teaching doctors and nurses best practice in microsuction ear wax removal.

Our patients especially value his attentiveness, thoroughness and straightforward, reassuring approach.

Away from the clinic, Danish is a keen padel player. He is currently working on his footwork, although he’ll happily tell you it is still very much in progress.

Microsuction uses a fine medical suction device in order to lift wax out of the ear. Meanwhile, a magnified endoscopic view guides us around the canal and eardrum. Because we use no water, there is no pressure against the eardrum and no risk of trapped moisture causing infection afterwards. In contrast, syringing happens without a clear view of the canal. That is why many clinicians now see microsuction as the safer option, and it is what we use as standard.

A few drops of olive oil for two or three days beforehand usually helps, because softer wax is easier to remove than dense, hard plugs of ear wax. However, please don’t use too much oil, since it can soften ear wax so much that it slides onto the eardrum. If you are unsure, give us a call beforehand, and then we can talk you through it.

Generally, this is the safest way to remove ear wax from an ear with a history of infection or operations. In fact, we deal with complex and advanced cases in house, including patients who have had mastoidectomies. However, if we judge that removal is not safe for you, we will say so and advise on the right route instead.
