Sound familiar?

Everyday signs of hearing loss.

The TV is louder than it used to be.

Someone in the room always reaches for the remote to turn it down.

"Pardon?" has become a habit.

You ask people to repeat things, then feel awkward asking again.

Busy places wear you out.

In a café or pub, the chatter around you drowns out the person opposite.

Grandchildren are hard to follow.

Young voices are high and quick, and they're often the first to get lost.

Phone calls feel like guesswork.

Without seeing someone's face, the words run together.

Clubs, church and meetings.

You can tell people are talking but miss what they're actually saying.

Hearing tends to change so gradually that it’s easy to blame mumbling, poor acoustics or the TV. Listening hard all day is tiring, and a lot of people start skipping things they used to enjoy. The cause can be as simple as ear wax, which we can spot on a screen in a couple of minutes. Or it may be a change in your hearing that properly fitted hearing aids would help with. A hearing test at our Sutton Coldfield clinic will tell you which, and the next step is your call. Still on the fence? Read how bad your hearing has to be before you need a hearing aid.

A letter from a patient at our Streetly clinic

Helen and Doug FosterHearing aid fitting with Zoya · Sutton Hearing Care, Streetly
“From the moment we met Zoya we were put at ease. It was a totally different experience.”

Having previously attended a local chain of stores for a hearing test, I was left very uncomfortable and disappointed. Zoya didn’t rush the appointment at all and understood what sort of hearing aid fitted my needs.

Read the full letter

Good morning

I just wanted to email in with some feedback following two appointments I have had with Zoya.

Firstly, on calling to discuss an initial assessment with yourselves at Streetly, I found the receptionist very helpful and accommodating to a time available for me to attend. My first impressions from this were good customer service and liaison.

Having previously attended a local chain of stores for a hearing test, I was left very uncomfortable and disappointed — it was not a nice experience at all. I was therefore a little unsure of what to expect from yourselves.

From the moment we met Zoya we were put at ease, everything was explained, test carried out and results shared instantly. It was a totally different experience. Zoya didn’t rush the appointment at all and understood what sort of hearing aid fitted my needs.

Being able to trial a set of hearing aids made a big difference (wasn’t offered by the store previously visited) and helped in the decision making. I didn’t know what to expect from them and this trial allowed me to experience the benefits of them.

Following my week’s trial I returned to see Zoya and confirmed that these were going to be of benefit to me, and as they were in stock I was able to leave the appointment with my new hearing aids — with a follow up appointment in 2 weeks to make any necessary adjustments.

I have no doubt that the after care will continue with the same professionalism.

Thank you to the team for making my visit and experiences so positive.

Kind regardsHelen and Doug Foster

Free 14-day home trial

Two weeks to see if hearing aids help you.

If your hearing test shows hearing aids could help, we programme a trial pair to your results and you wear them in your normal routine for 14 days. After that you can keep them, try something different or hand them back. The trial is free.

At home.

The kettle clicking off, the doorbell, birdsong in the garden.

With family.

Keeping up with everyone round the table at Sunday lunch.

Out and about.

Shopping in Mere Green or a walk in Sutton Park.

Watching TV.

At a volume the whole room is happy with.

Then you decide.

Keep them, try another option or hand them back.

  • The trial is available once a free hearing test shows hearing aids could help you.
  • Your audiologist fits the trial hearing aids and sets them to your test results.
  • There’s no charge for the trial and no deposit.
  • Wear them for 14 days. You can bring them back at any point during the trial.

Independent hearing centre Streetly

Why choose us

Your independent hearing centre in Sutton Coldfield.

Sutton Hearing Care is an independent audiologist in Sutton Coldfield, not part of a hearing aid manufacturer or a national chain. Our audiologists are HCPC-registered, and our lead audiologist, Mohammed Khizar, has more than 20 years’ experience in NHS and independent hearing care. We fit hearing aids from several manufacturers, so what we suggest depends on your test results, your daily routine and your budget. You’ll usually see the same audiologist each time, and most adjustments and repairs are done here in Streetly instead of being posted away.

Advice that isn't tied to one brand.

We aren't contracted to a single manufacturer, so we can recommend whichever hearing aid suits you best.

The same audiologist throughout.

Where possible, the person who tests your hearing also fits your hearing aids and sees you at every follow-up.

Try them for 14 days.

Wear a trial pair at home and out and about. If they're not right, bring them back.

Phonak, Oticon, Signia and more.

We also fit Starkey, ReSound, Widex and Unitron, and we'll compare them side by side for you.

Measured, not guessed.

Real ear measurements show what your hearing aids are delivering inside your ears, not just what the fitting software predicts.

Aftercare in Streetly.

Adjustments, cleaning, servicing and most repairs happen at the clinic, with same-day appointments when we have space.

Your free hearing test

Your hearing test in Sutton Coldfield, step by step.

Free · Up to 90 minutes · No GP referral needed · Results explained on the day

We start with a chat.

Tell us where you find hearing hardest and what you'd most like to hear better. Bring a family member if you like. They often notice things you don't.

We check your ears and hearing.

Your audiologist looks into your ear canals on a screen to rule out wax, checks how your eardrums move (tympanometry) and tests your hearing across a range of pitches. Speech-in-noise tests, including QuickSIN, show how well you follow conversation when it's busy. Allow up to 90 minutes.

We explain your results.

You'll see your audiogram on the day, explained in plain English, and you can take a copy home.

You decide what happens next.

If hearing aids would help, we'll show you suitable styles and technology levels, with prices. If they wouldn't, we'll say so. There's no obligation either way.

Yes. If your test shows hearing aids would help, we set up a trial pair for your hearing and you wear them for 14 days at home, free of charge. At the end you can keep them, try a different model or return them. The full trial terms are further up this page.

As an independent clinic, we fit hearing aids from Phonak, Oticon, Signia, Starkey, ReSound, Widex and Unitron. There’s no need to choose a brand beforehand. We compare suitable options using your test results, how you live and what you want to spend. Our guide explains how to compare hearing aid brands.

Yes, and most of the hearing aids we fit are rechargeable. You put them in the charger overnight and they run all day. If you’d rather use standard batteries, some models still take them. Here’s more on rechargeable or battery hearing aids.

Most modern hearing aids connect to iPhone and Android phones over Bluetooth, so you can take calls, stream the TV and change settings in an app. A few features depend on your phone model, so bring it with you and we’ll check what works.

Yes. Invisible-in-canal hearing aids are made from an impression of your ear and sit deep in the canal, where they’re very hard to spot. They suit mild to moderate hearing loss, and your ear canal needs to be the right size and shape. We can check that at your free test.

Yes. Bring the quote or recommendation you’ve been given, or your NHS test results, and we’ll explain what’s been offered and whether other options are worth a look. Second opinions are free and there’s no obligation.

Yes. If you live in Sutton Coldfield, NHS hearing services are arranged through Birmingham and Solihull, and you’ll normally need a GP referral first. Over the border in Walsall or Lichfield the process can differ, so ask your GP. NHS hearing aids are free on long-term loan, with free batteries and repairs. They’re usually behind-the-ear models, and waiting times vary. Our article on free and low-cost hearing aid options explains more.

For some people, yes. When everyday sounds are easier to hear, tinnitus often becomes less noticeable. Hearing aids aren’t a cure and results vary, so mention your tinnitus at your free test and we’ll talk about what might help. You can also read about hearing aids for tinnitus.

We look in your ears on screen before the hearing test, because wax can muffle sound and skew the results. If wax is blocking the canal, it has to come out first. We can book you in for ear wax removal in Sutton Coldfield with microsuction, then rebook your test. We leave at least 24 hours between microsuction and a diagnostic hearing test so the results are accurate.

No. You can book a private hearing test with us directly. If you suddenly lose hearing in one or both ears, though, ask for an urgent GP appointment or call NHS 111, because it may need treating quickly. More on sudden hearing loss in one ear.
